Language is essential in outreaching diverse populations. Here are some tips on how to use language to be more inclusive.
Learn which are the most common languages in your community and make sure you have communication in those languages. Do not use google translate, find someone from that community to inform you as to the best way to disseminate information within that community.
Be mindful of pronouns. Acknowledge people's preferred pronouns and don't use gendered pronouns for general information.
Use plain language and avoid using jargon or expressions. Make information accessible and easy to understand.
Be mindful of words related to race, ethnicity, nationality or culture.
Always use person first language. Remember everyone is multidimensional and can identify in different ways at the same time.
